This is the free loyalty program of Starbucks Coffee Company. You earn Stars when you pay at participating stores. You trade Stars for free drinks, food, and some merchandise.
The program is huge. Starbucks reported more than 35 million 90-day active members in early 2026. Members drove nearly 60 percent of U.S. company-operated revenue in fiscal 2025. That equals more than $13 billion in spend.
Global chief brand officer Tressie Lieberman announced the redesign at Starbucks’ January 2026 Investor Day. She called the old setup “one-size-fits-some.” The goal is faster earning for people who spend more.
How Does Starbucks Rewards Work?
You join, pay through the app or a registered Starbucks Card, and collect Stars. Your level sets how many Stars each dollar earns. Stars then unlock rewards at six redemption tiers.
Two counters run at once. Your Star balance goes down when you redeem. Your status progress only goes up. Redeeming never lowers your level.
Here is the basic flow:
- Create an account in the app or at starbucks.com/rewards.
- Pay with the app, a registered Starbucks Card, or another linked payment method at a participating store.
- Stars post to your account, usually within about 24 hours.
- Pick a reward in the app, or tell the barista you want to redeem.
Stars are tied to eligible spend. Tax, tips, and fees can be excluded from Star earning.
What Are the Starbucks Rewards Levels?
People search for Starbucks levels, Starbucks tiers, membership levels, member levels, or status levels. Starbucks itself calls them levels. The program has three: Green, Gold, and Reserve. Every new member starts at Green. When the tiers launched, Starbucks sorted existing members by their 2025 Star activity. It did not publish how many members landed in each level.

Among Starbucks tiers, Reserve is the only one with a free personalized Reserve Card. Starbucks status levels also change your birthday window.

What Are the New Starbucks Levels?
The new Starbucks levels replaced one flat program on March 10, 2026. Green is the old baseline with fresh perks. Gold and Reserve are the new status levels above it. Each level raises your Star rate and adds benefits.
How Do You Move Up Starbucks Status Levels?
All Stars you earn in a 12-month window count, including Bonus Stars. Redemptions do not subtract. Once you reach a level, you have a full 12 months to keep it or reach the next one.
Starbucks’ FAQ says you reach Reserve by earning 2,500 Stars once you are at Gold. Since your first 500 Stars already make you Gold, you pass through Gold on the way. Expect to move up as you cross each line.

Is There a Starbucks Subscription Plan?
No. There is no Starbucks subscription plan, and joining the program is free. A viral claim about a $65 unlimited coffee subscription was a rumor. Starbucks has not announced a Starbucks subscription of that kind.
The closest thing is the free membership with its levels. Starbucks member levels depend on how many Stars you earn, so Starbucks membership levels are earned, not bought. You earn status by spending, not by paying a monthly fee. Reloading your card is optional and only earns Bonus Stars.
How Many Stars Do You Earn Per Dollar?
Your level decides your rate. Payment type no longer sets it.

Bring a reusable cup to earn double Stars on that order. A Gold member then earns 2.4 Stars per dollar. A Reserve member earns 3.4.
Some purchases earn nothing. These include alcohol, Starbucks Card purchases and reloads, delivery orders, and guest checkouts. Taxes, tips, and fees can also be excluded.
How Do Reload Bonus Stars Work?
Digitally reload your Starbucks Card with $30 or more to earn 10 Bonus Stars. Reload $50 or more to earn 25 Bonus Stars. Starbucks caps this at 25 Bonus Stars per transaction. Auto-reload counts too.
That cap makes $50 the sweet spot. A $50 reload earns 0.5 Bonus Stars per dollar. A $30 reload earns about 0.33. A $100 reload still earns only 25. Pay with the loaded card, and a Green member reaches about 1.5 Stars per dollar. This is my calculation from the published terms.
What Are Double Star Days?
Starbucks picks certain days when you earn double or triple Stars. Green members get personalized days. Gold members get four extra each year, and Reserve members get six. You must sign in to the app or opt in to marketing email to hear about them.

You cannot combine two redemption tiers inside one beverage order. Alcohol, Starbucks Cards, multi-serve items, and delivery orders do not qualify. Some stores offer only the 200-Star tier.
How Many Stars Do You Need for a Free Drink?

What Can You Get With 400 Stars?
Select merchandise or packaged Starbucks Reserve coffee, up to $20. The old Starbucks free mug rewards program searchers remember is this tier. Starbucks can change which items sit in each tier at any time.
What Breakfast Can You Redeem?

Green members can extend expiring Stars by one month. Take one action in the month before they expire. Make a qualifying purchase, redeem a Reward, or digitally reload $30 or more. You can repeat this forever.
Here is an example from Starbucks’ terms. Stars set to expire April 1 move to May 1 if you act in March.
Starbucks may also deactivate an account after two straight years with no Stars earned. In that case, all Stars are void.
Starbucks Birthday Rewards
Yes, Starbucks gives a free Birthday Reward. You pick one handcrafted drink, one food item, or one bottled drink. Multi-serve items, alcohol, merchandise, and packaged coffee are excluded.
To qualify, do three things:
- Join at least seven days before your birthday.
- Add your birthday to your account.
- Make at least one Star-earning purchase before your birthday each year.
The reward appears automatically. Green members can redeem it only on the birthday itself. Gold members get 7 days from the birthday. Reserve members get 30 days.
What Are Free Mod Mondays?
Free Mod Mondays give you one free drink customization each month. Starbucks picks the Monday and announces it in the app and by email. You apply the coupon at checkout or tell your barista.
The discount covers your most expensive modifier. Starbucks’ FAQ says up to $2.25. The program terms say up to $2 before tax. Plan on about $2.

Can You Add a Starbucks Receipt to Rewards?
I could not confirm an official receipt-scan option for missing Stars. If you pay with the app or a registered card, Stars post automatically. That usually takes about 24 hours.
If Stars are missing, try these steps:
- Wait 24 hours.
- Check whether the purchase was excluded, such as alcohol, a card reload, or a delivery order.
- Open the Starbucks customer service portal and pick the missing Stars topic.
- Have the date, time, store, and amount ready.
A cash or unregistered purchase may not earn Stars. Certain stores only award Stars on Starbucks Card payments.
Can You Use Starbucks Rewards at Target?
Partly. Target cafes are licensed stores run under Target, so rules differ from standalone Starbucks stores. Reports say you must pay with the Starbucks app or a Starbucks Card to earn Stars there. Redemption can be limited to food and drinks.
Each licensed cafe chooses which perks it honors. Gold-level perks may not apply. Target Circle rewards and Target gift cards do not work as Starbucks payment. Ask the cafe before you plan around a redemption.
Does Starbucks Rewards Work With Delta SkyMiles?
Yes, for linked accounts. Delta and Starbucks restarted their mileage perk on August 5, 2026. Linked members earn 1 SkyMile per $1 at participating Starbucks stores.
There is a catch. You need a qualifying Delta flight within the past 12 months. Newly linked members can earn for their first 12 months. Link both accounts at deltastarbucks.com. Double Stars on days with a scheduled Delta flight continue too.
The 1,000 bonus mile offer ended September 30, 2026.
Is There a Starbucks Rewards Visa Card?
Not that I could confirm. The Starbucks Visa credit card appears to be closed to new applicants, according to secondary sources. I found no official 2026 statement. Check Chase or the Starbucks app before you apply for any card that promises Stars.
What Is the Starbucks Rewards Pink Bearista Cup?
The Pink Bearista is a 20-ounce Pink Drink tumbler with a clear glass bear. Reserve members got first access through the Starbucks Shop starting July 9, 2026. Other customers could buy it in stores from July 13 while supplies lasted.
Starbucks did not set a Star price for it. Reserve status unlocked early access. That window has passed, so check the Starbucks Shop for any restock.
What Changed in the 2026 Relaunch?

Starbucks says it changed the program in response to member feedback. Critics say the base rate fell for people who prepaid with the app. Restaurant Dive notes the Star cost of redemptions did not change.
An earlier reset hit in February 2023. Starbucks raised several redemption costs then. The 50-Star reward became 100 Stars, and 150 became 200.

$3 Thursday was a limited-time promotion, not a standing weekly deal. In January 2024, Starbucks offered Rewards members a $3 handcrafted drink in grande size or smaller. 6,000 Stars are worth about $300 in free drinks. The best case is $360 if every redemption hits the full 100-Star cap of $6. The range is $200 to $360, based on which tier you redeem.

Stars to dollars also depends on how you earned them. At the Green rate, 6,000 Stars equals $6,000 of spend. At Gold it takes $5,000. At Reserve it takes about $3,529. A balance that large would also put you at Reserve.

You need to spend about $2,500 at the Green rate. Moving up levels as you go lowers that to about $2,167. Smart $50 reloads cut it to about $1,510. Reserve needs 2,500 Stars earned in a 12-month period.

Bonus Stars count toward status, according to Starbucks’ FAQ. The paths assume your new rate starts right after you cross 500 Stars. Starbucks does not spell that out, so treat the numbers as estimates. A personal cup doubles the Stars on that order and shortens the path further.
If you meant a $2,500 spend, you would earn 2,500 or more Stars and reach Reserve in one year. These calculations are my own, using Starbucks’ published earn rates.
Who Wins Under the New Starbucks Tiers?
Heavy spenders and light visitors both gain something. Reserve members earn the most per dollar and get extra perks. Light visitors gain from Stars that never expire at Gold and Reserve. Green members who keep a monthly purchase also keep their Stars. Frequent Green customers who loaded the app card may earn less than before.

When Did Starbucks Rewards Start?
I could not confirm one official launch date. A third-party timeline says Starbucks added a paid Gold Card in November 2008. It says that program merged into My Starbucks Rewards by December 2009. Starbucks retired the old Gold Card in 2019. Today’s Green, Gold, and Reserve levels are different and started March 10, 2026.
