What Is Starbucks Rewards
Starbucks Rewards is Starbucks’ free loyalty program. Members earn Stars on purchases and redeem them for free drinks, food, and other perks. As of the March 2026 relaunch, the program has three status levels — Green, Gold, and Reserve — each with a different earn rate and set of benefits. There’s no cost to join, and every new member starts at Green.

How Starbucks Rewards Works
You earn Stars every time you pay with a registered Starbucks Card, through the app, or with a linked payment method tied to your account. Your status level determines how fast you earn:

Reserve doesn’t require passing through Gold first. Star totals are tracked continuously, so a member who earns 2,500 Stars in a 12-month window moves straight to Reserve. Once you reach a level, it holds for a full 12 months; to stay at Gold or Reserve after that, you need to re-earn 500 or 2,500 Stars again in the next 12-month period, or you’ll drop back down.
All members also get two perks that apply regardless of level: Free Mod Mondays, a once-a-month coupon for one free drink customization (up to a $2.25 value, redeemable at checkout in the app or by asking your barista), and Double Stars for bringing a personal cup, which stacks on top of your normal earn rate any time you use a reusable cup (so a Gold member earns 2.4 Stars per dollar and a Reserve member earns 3.4 Stars per dollar on that order).
One notable change from the old program: paying with a physical or app-loaded Starbucks Card used to earn double Stars automatically. That’s gone. In its place, Starbucks now rewards digitally reloading your card instead of just paying with it (see the reload bonus below).

Redemption tiers are capped at a dollar value, so you know exactly what a given Star balance covers:

How to Join Starbucks Rewards
Joining is free. Download the Starbucks app or sign up at starbucks.com/rewards, create an account, and add a payment method or Starbucks Card. You’ll start earning Stars on your very first purchase. There’s no minimum spend and no annual fee.
You can also earn Bonus Stars just by loading funds onto your Starbucks Card digitally: a reload of $30 or more earns 10 Bonus Stars, and $50 or more earns 25 Bonus Stars (capped at 25 Bonus Stars per transaction).
Link other loyalty accounts. Starbucks Rewards can be linked with select partner programs, including Delta SkyMiles and Marriott Bonvoy, to unlock additional cross-brand benefits for travel and hospitality. Do Starbucks Stars Expire
It depends on your level:
- Green members: Stars expire 6 months after they’re earned, but you can extend an expiring batch by one month at a time by making a qualifying purchase, redeeming a Reward, or reloading $30 or more to your Starbucks Card in the app the month before they’re set to expire. You can keep extending indefinitely this way.
- Gold and Reserve members: Stars never expire, as long as you maintain your status level.
The Starbucks Birthday Reward
Every Rewards member gets a free reward on their birthday, provided you’ve added your birthday to your account and made at least one qualifying purchase beforehand. The reward covers any handcrafted beverage of your choice, any food item, or a bottled beverage (it excludes alcohol, merchandise, and packaged coffee).
How long you have to redeem it depends on your level: standard for Green members, a 7-day window for Gold, and a full 30 days for Reserve. If you already made a qualifying purchase earlier in the year, you don’t need to buy anything else that day to redeem it.
